Polly- Female Sugar Glider
Polly- Female Sugar Glider, a small marsupial native to Australia, Indonesia, and New Guinea, is known for their gliding abilities and sociable nature. They are compact and lightweight, weighing between 80 to 130 grams. Their soft, silky fur is gray with a black dorsal stripe running from the nose to the tail. Their large, black eyes are well-adapted for night vision, and their patagium enables them to glide effortlessly between trees. A key distinguishing feature of the female sugar glider is their pouch, similar to other marsupials like kangaroos and koalas. This forward-facing pouch is where she carries and nurses her joeys (baby gliders) after birth. After a short gestation of about 16 days, the tiny, undeveloped joey crawls into the pouch, where it continues to grow and develop for approximately 60–70 days. This maternal process makes female sugar gliders crucial for species propagation.
Female sugar gliders reach sexual maturity around 8–12 months of age and can breed twice a year under optimal conditions. They are attentive and nurturing mothers, often carrying their young on their backs once the joeys leave the pouch. This maternal bond is strong and lasts until the joeys become independent.
